Notable Projects
Former Stapleton International Airport - Filings 18 & 19
Denver, Colorado
Client: City and County of Denver
Contract Value: Over $19 Million
Date: 2008 - 2010
ESA identified, excavated, loaded, packaged and hauled over 750,000 cubic yards of friable and non-friable asbestos debris contaminated soil from the Former Stapleton International Airport redevelopment site. Working closely with the City and County of Denver, URS, Family Environmental Compliance Services, and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Solid Waste and Air Pollution Control Divisions, ESA prepared and successfully implemented a Soils Characterization and Management Plan under the recently adopted revisions to the Solid Waste Regulations. As the project has progressed, ESA accommodated site development priorities by executing its work in phases.
Former Stapleton International Airport - Filing 7
Denver, Colorado
Client: City and County of Denver
Contract Value: $450,000
Date: Completed 2010
This pilot asbestos contaminated soils project is currently ongoing at the former Stapleton International Airport. ESA, in partnership with the City and County of Denver and Family Environmental, is exploring a new way of remediating stockpiles. Utilizing scrapers, ESA is laying out soils in large lay-down areas. Trained inspectors then walk the laid out soils. Should asbestos materials be found, the inspectors pull out those materials and dispose of them properly. Once the materials are rendered free from asbestos, the piles are then cleared and placed in a ‘clean’ pile. This new method allows the materials to remain on site and be reused as opposed to being hauled off site and placed in a disposal facility. Additionally, this visionary method saves on fuel, poly and disposal, saving the City and County significantly. It also is a much more environmentally friendly option. Once this pilot program is complete, there is a chance that suspect stockpiles such as the ones found on Filing 7 can be safely cleaned by this more efficient and cost-effective method.

Fitzsimons Redevelopment Soils Remediation
(Former Air Force Barracks)
Aurora, Colorado
Client: Fitzsimons Redevelopment Authority
Contract Value: $250,000
Date: November 2009- February 2010
ESA was awarded two separate contracts to perform all demolition, asbestos abatement, as well as soil remediation on this former military barracks building.  Initially, ESA safely abated underground steam tunnels with asbestos piping.  After safely remove contaminated soils, as well as a buried tank and other hazardous materials.  Since the remediation was not part of the original construction schedule, ESA designed a plan that would minimize construction delays.  Despite downtown traffic, ESA was able to finish the job in a matter of weeks.

The Denver Federal Center
Saint Anthony's Hospital
Lakewood, Colorado
Client: Walsh Environmental Scientists/RE Monks Construction
Contract Value: $1.2 million
Date: January - March 2009
ESA was ideally suited for this asbestos contaminated soils project consisting of a 121,000 cubic yard excavation. The project also required the building of a parking lot, and all final site work for what is now Saint Anthony’s Hospital in Lakewood, Colorado.

Walsh Environmental provided all of the project oversight. ESA worked closely with RE Monks Construction, who handled all of the project management, site work, trucking and parking lot construction. ESA lined, loaded, wrapped and handled all of the asbestos contaminated soil, in addition to select site demolition. ESA’s well-trained crew of Hazwoper & Asbestos certified employees were able to maintain an aggressive schedule despite tough winter conditions and difficult access to the site.

River Point at Sheridan Landfill Cleanup
Lakewood, Colorado
Client: Walsh Environmental
Contract Value: Over $300,000
Date: August 2007
ESA excavated, loaded, packaged and hauled approximately 7,000 cubic yards of friable and non-friable asbestos debris contaminated soil and trash from the River Point at Sheridan Redevelopment Site. ESA met the challenges of establishing and maintaining required engineering controls and decontamination facilities within this large landfill remediation site. ESA remobilized rapidly on numerous occasions as asbestos debris was encountered, minimizing potential delays to the project.
Sand Creek Parkway
Aurora, Colorado
Client: Matrix Design Group
Contract Value: $585,418
Date: March 2004 – February 2005
ESA excavated, loaded, packaged and hauled over 5,000 cubic yards of friable and non-friable asbestos debris contaminated soil from the City of Aurora’s Sand Creek Parkway at Fitzsimons site. ESA, Walsh Environmental, Matrix Design Group, and the City of Aurora’s program managers developed a cost-effective approach to the remediation of asbestos debris containing soil associated with underground utility tunnels and nearby spoils piles. The project was completed on time and budget despite inclement weather conditions and limited access to subject materials.
ESA was awarded two separate contracts to perform all demolition, asbestos abatement, as well as soil remediation on this former military barracks building. Initially, ESA safely abated underground steam tunnels with asbestos piping. After safely removing these materials and surrounding soils, ESA performed all demolition of the site. Once the demolition was completed, testing was done on the soils within the building footprint. Casey Resources performed all of the oversite.
